Some times you have to reflect on what you have done to see where you are going. I have found that reflection on the past is good for the soul and can help direct your future.

I was looking for inspiration early this week, and I was going through my old drawings on my hard drive when I came upon this pic that I drew a while back. The file’s creation date is 11/1/2005. The short story is that the girl that I was with then convinced me to start drawing again. I had just picked up a tablet and my first copy of Photoshop. When I drew it I thought that it had come out pretty well and I thought I would submit it to this drawing forum that I had found. Any way they ripped me shreds. Told me my proportions were way off that she looked deformed that I had detached her legs from her non existent hips. I was at first offended then defensive and then pissed off. But when I got over my ego and listened to what they had to say I found out that if I wanted to draw. I would have to basically start over and really learn how to draw. I committed to getting better and listened to everything people said about my drawings. I continue to draw every day. I draw lots of different things, DID’s take up most of my time obviously, but just sitting down at a desk with a piece of paper and a pencil and creating something new makes me happy. I hope I can continue to do this for the rest of my life. It’s a wonderful hobby and through the DA I’ve met some pretty cool like minded people.

I redrew that pic and you can see them both in my gallery. And while I know that I’m not “There” yet, I’ve improved a lot over the last two and a half years. Swallowing your ego, listening to people who know what they are talking about and working hard to get better really pays off. And that is an important lesson that even and old dog like me can learn.
